Nanoscribe Use Policies: Rev. July 2023
Policies for the use of the Nansocribe in the Research Prototyping Lab. These are separate from the
General Policies
- Terrapin Works employees should only be contacted via terrapinworks@umd.edu
- Permission must be obtained from Terrapin Works staff prior to the removal of any items or materials from the lab. The only exception is user prints
- All researchers must wear long pants and closed toed shoes in the Nansocribe room
- At the beginning of each month, all prints that are more than 1 month old and still in the room will be thrown out
- Personal belongings are not permitted into the Nanoscribe room
- Personal belongings including bags must be left against the wall next to the sink
- Only the reservation holder is allowed to print on the Nanoscribe during the reserved time
- Terrapin Works employees can change the names and accounts on a reservation with permission from any involved parties prior to the reservation’s start
- Priority for computer use is given to the reservation holder
- The door to Nanoscribe room should remain closed at all times
- The door can be opened only when the Nanoscribe room is occupied and additional ventilation is needed
- In the event of serious breaches of our policy you will be contacted and repeated violations may result in the removal of access to the space and machine
- Labs will be responsible for the cost of replacing or repairing any equipment that is damaged due to misuse or neglect. This will be invoiced billed directly to KFS accounts
Reservation Policies
- Users must have a reservation to print on the Nanoscribe
- Reservations can be made at ++nemo.tw.umd.edu++
- Instructions on using NEMO can be found here, on the Terrapin Works Dozuki
- There must be at least 15 min between reservations to allow prior users time to clean up the area
- Reservations cannot be edited or deleted 1 hour prior to their start time
- Exceptions can be made by Terrapin Works staff at their discretion if contacted with ample notice prior to the start of the reservation
- The Nanoscribe log (icon at the top center of the Nanoscribe computer) is required to be completed at the end of every reservation
- All jobs must be either completed or aborted by the end of the reservation
- Reservations should include enough time to prepare samples, print parts, and clean the Nanoscribe (~10+ minutes)
- Users should remove any prints present in the printer at the start of their reservation and label them appropriately*
- If the machine is used outside of a reservation period, the additional time will be billed to the user.
- Users may also cancel any jobs left running during their reservation at their discretion
- Jobs estimated to print 4 hours or longer should be reserved for overnight printing (after 5pm)
*Terrapin Works staff or researchers who remove prints that are left on the printer during their reservation time are not responsible for damage or loss of print jobs.
Cleaning Policies
- The objectives must be cleaned at the end of every reservation
- All additional equipment (sample holders, beakers, etc.) should be cleaned at the end of every reservation
- The Nanoscribe and fume hood areas should be cleaned and organized at the end of every reservation
Removing previous users’ prints from the Nanoscribe
- If you do not need the sample holder
- Set the sample holder on the platform in the fume hood after yours is prepared
- Label a sticky note with the date (mm/dd/yyyy) and time of removal, along with the previous reservation holder’s name (This information can be found in tw-schedule)
- If you need the sample holder
- Carefully wash off any Oil on the bottom of the slide (only necessary for oil mode slides, since the oil may stick to the petri dish)
- Carefully remove slides from the sample holder and place in a plastic petri dish** (do not develop)
- Label a sticky note or tape with the date (mm/dd/yyyy) and time of removal, along with the previous reservation holder’s name
- Place the petri dish on the wire shelf
**Plastic petri dishes are located on the bottom shelf of the cabinet under the fume hood. There are also extra sleeves in boxes under the wire shelf just outside the Nanoscribe room
