Prusa i3 MK3S
The Prusa i3 MK3S is a Fused Deposition Modelling (FDM) 3D printer that can print small parts quickly and cheaply while still offering a good resolution for the price. This machine prints in PLA and PETG and is best suited for rapidly prototyping parts or for printing parts that will not undergo excessive amounts of stress or heat. If you’re looking for a machine that can print in stronger materials it may be worth looking into other options like the Markforged Mark Two. The Prusa is equipped with the Multi Material Upgrade (MMU) that allows it to print in up to five different colors at once.
The Prusa i3 MK3S has been recognized as a top consumer 3D printer by many sources: ALL3DP named it the “best 3D printer” in 2020, the NY Times named it “the best 3D printer”, and TechRadar included the i3 MK3S in its list of top printers of 2021.
Layer Thickness (Z resolution)
The Prusa can print parts with layer thicknesses of 0.05 mm, 0.07 mm, 0.10 mm, 0.15 mm, 0.20 mm, and 0.30 mm. The recommended layer thickness is 0.15 mm because it offers a reasonable balance between print time, structural integrity, printability, and detail. Thicknesses lower than 0.15 mm are not typically suitable for functional parts, while thicknesses greater than 0.15 mm print faster, stronger structural parts while sacrificing detail.
The XY resolution of the Prusa is approximately 0.01mm, or 10 micron.

Material Options
Name | Cost | Glass transition temperature | Usage | Description |
---|---|---|---|---|
PLA | $ | 60°C | Low cost prototypes, aesthetic models | The most widely printed material in consumer grade 3D printers. While a good general-purpose material, it is brittle and has a low heat resistance. |
PETG | $$ | 80°C | Structural parts | Stronger and slightly more heat resistant than PLA. PETG has a glossy surface that makes painting and gluing difficult. |
Multi Material Upgrade (MMU)
The Prusa i3 MK3S is installed with the Multi Material Upgrade (MMU) from Prusa, allowing it to print in up to five different colors or materials at the same time. Read more about it here or ask us how we can incorporate the MMU into your next print!
